Bok Tower Gardens is a National Historic Landmark located in Lake Wales, Florida. It is one of the natural beauties of Polk County; a place that everyone should visit.
It took us a few years after moving to Florida to finally make our way to Bok Tower to visit. One of my homeschooling friends set up a field trip, so the girls and I finally took the time to visit this beautiful sites.
I have to say that it was one of the most peaceful and beautiful gardens I’ve seen. My kids and I were mesmerized. There is always something blooming, which gives us a reason to go back and visit throughout the year.
Why should you visit Bok Tower Gardens?
1. Beautiful Grounds
As you stroll through the gardens, you will find palms, oaks, and ferns, along with acres of beautiful blooms. Founded by Edward W. Bok and designed by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. , the gardens were created as contemplative woodlands, full of serene resting spots and stunning vistas. At an elevation of 298 feet, the sunset overlook is one of the highest points in peninsular Florida and offers one of the most spectacular views at Bok Tower.
2. Volunteer Guides
Volunteer guides are assigned for field trips. As a homeschool mom, this was perfect for me because it helped make the trip educational and stress-free. The knowledge our guide possessed was astounding and she eagerly shared while engaging all of the students. My kids continue to talk about which plants are native or not – all because of our guide.
3. What’s in Bloom Table
By the Welcome Center there is a table where cuttings of all of the plants that are currently in bloom sit in vases. I loved this! Without any research on my part, we learned the plant names, what the blooms looked like and then we went out to see if we could find them, like a scavenger hunt.
4. Singing Tower Carillon
Within the Singing Tower is one of the world’s finest carillons and one of the largest and most important carillon libraries. You can enjoy two live concerts performed on the 60 bell carillon every Thursday-Sunday. Although you can hear the music anywhere on the grounds, they have benches next to the tower where you can also watch the carillonneur play via a live feed. There are recorded concerts played during the other days of the week.
5. Ponds and Reflecting Pool
Throughout the grounds you will find various ponds surrounded by stunning Florida nature. Many are home to birds, fish and other animals. As you wind you way to the highest point of the gardens, you will come to the reflecting pool, which offers you your first view of the 205 foot Singing Tower. It will take your breath away.
