Just when I felt like we were getting a handle on how to homeschool high school, the next big hurdle began creeping up on us — college entrance exams! Math has always been a challenge in our homeschool so we knew we would need some extra help preparing for the math portion of the exams. After doing our research we found the most effective option to be a live online SAT math prep course.
I received access to this online course and was compensated for my time in writing this post. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links.
Because of my teen’s learning challenges he isn’t a fan of math or tests. He does, however, have a goal to attend college so he understands that both of these things will be part of his future. To help him begin to prepare for the next leg of his journey we sought to find tools to help him build strong test taking strategies and, in the process, also build his confidence.
There are a number of SAT prep courses available but we thought it was important to begin with one that focused on the math portion of the exam specifically. We were hoping to find an online map prep course that would fit our homeschool schedule and provided the feedback and support my son needed.
We are happy to say our needs for an SAT math prep course were met, and exceeded, with Mr. D’s SAT Math Bootcamp!
Benefits of and Online SAT Math Prep Course
As our kids are entering the high school years we have been searching for more online course options, as these seem to fit our teens’ learning styles fairly well. As a homeschooling family, however, we are pretty particular when we evaluate online courses. We will admit that we have high expectations – we want a course to offer value, substance, and flexibility.
After spending time with Mr. D’s SAT Math Bootcamp my son and I are pleased to share 3 benefits we have experienced by using this homeschool friendly SAT math prep course:
1 – Building Strong Test-Taking Strategies
After spending just 30 minutes in the first online session my son and I were already thinking about the exam in an entirely different way. We were surprised to learn that understanding math principles and formulas is only part of the challenge of preparing for the SAT. The bigger issue is looking at word problems in order to figure out what is actually being asked and then finding the most efficient way to identify the solution.
During the live online classes Mr. D walks students through sample test questions. He begins by reading through the problem in a particular way that helps students learn to identify what the problem is specifically asking vs. what extra information is included just to confuse students.
Understanding how to identify the necessary information within each problem is a huge test taking strategy for students. After the critical information is identified, Mr. D helps students review the formulas they will most likely use on the exam. Then he shows the value in using the various multiple choice answers provided to determine which solutions are incorrect and then verifying the one that becomes a possible solution.
Learning how to most effectively and efficiently approach test questions has been a big confidence booster for my son. He now sees that there is a logical way to approach questions and he doesn’t feel as overwhelmed with all of the irrelevant information that is added to the questions.
2 – Live, Online, Interactive Group Sessions Ensure Understanding
As I’ve already noted, the SAT Math Bootcamp includes live, online group sessions. The program includes a one-hour live group session each week for 6 weeks. Each session includes up to 25 students.
My students have participated in a number of online classes and Mr. D’s sessions are by far the most interactive and engaging we have experienced. The technology he uses to run the online event allows students to “chat” with the instructor, which Mr. D highly encourages.
His energy and enthusiasm for the material and his students is obvious from the first moment the first session begins. As he works through problems he calls students by name and asks them to respond to questions. He checks to ensure they understand the material before he moves on and he encourages them to ask questions.
It is important to note that these sessions are recorded, therefore, if your student can’t attend a session Mr. D sends a link to the recording out to all students the next day. This also gives students a chance to watch the session again if they want to review the information again at their own pace.
3 – Online Math Test Portal Offers Many Opportunities for Practice
Once registered for the SAT math prep course students are also given access to Mr. D’s online test prep portal. This site includes additional test prep information and practice students can work through at their own pace.
Not only does this portal include additional SAT math practice, it also includes information for all sections of the ACT, SAT, and PERT exams. There are videos, writing rubrics, games for student practice, practice tests, and links to other helpful websites.
As a parent I find this portal to be invaluable! I would have spent hours searching for this type of information but it has all been gathered and presented in a very helpful fashion for us. This is a site we have already referred to many times as it allows us to use additional tools at our own pace to practice additional sections of the exams.
