Build your own atom!
If you’re studying chemistry in your home school, you’ll definitely want to add this atom activity for middle school to your lesson plans. When I taught chemistry in our co-op, one exercise that all of the older kids enjoyed was building atoms with M&Ms. What isn’t fun about building a candy atom model?
Sure, it’s fun because it involves candy, but it also gives middle schoolers a chance to really dive into and learn more about the periodic table. Through this activity, by building any atom they want, kids will learn how to use the periodic table to determine the number of shells an atom has, as well as the placement of the electrons.
Grab this atom worksheet and use it with your chemistry curriculum to add some hands-on fun to your study of atoms and the periodic table.
