What is Mental Math
Solving math equations in your head instead of using tools, like a calculator, are mental math skills.
It enables students to calculate answers quickly without having to work through each problem step-by-step.
It’s a crucial component of mathematics and a skill that kids will use throughout their lives.
How to Improve Mental Math
Middle schoolers can get better at figuring out the correct answers to math equations by practicing regularly. The more often they solve problems in their head, the easier it gets.
They can do this by:
- frequently playing math board games
- using flashcards

Additionally, taking time each day to review past lessons is a good way to strengthen math skills.

How to Play Mental Math BINGO
This is a simple game that uses regular BINGO rules for players to win.
First, print off the game boards. Use cardstock or laminate them to make them more durable. Then, let each player choose a board and put 3 dice in the middle of the playing area.
Then, it’s time to play.
- Players take turns rolling 3 dice.
- After a player rolls the dice, they’ll use different math functions to build a math equation using the numbers on the dice. ➕, ➖, ✖️, ➗
- The goal is to build an equation with basic operations that equals a number on their game board when it’s solved.
- For example, let’s say you roll a 5, 3, and 2. If you have the number 16 on your game board, you could do 5 + 3 = 8 x 2 = 16.
- If players can successfully build a math problem that equals a number on their board, they cover that number with a token.
- Using the above example, because the person could combine the numbers they rolled, so the right answer was 16, they will cover #16 on their game board.
- If the number is not on the game board, the turn is lost and it is the next player’s turn.
- The first player to get five squares in a row wins.
